Can you believe 2018 is coming to a close? If you’re scratching your head wondering where it all went and what it meant, perhaps it’s time to take inventory of past, present, and future. Join me to close out a successful year and prep for the good stuff that awaits in 2019.
Make a list, check it twice. I’m typically on the ball with listing my to-do’s, but sometimes in the flurry of early AM activity, I end up winging my day. However, during the year’s home stretch, I push to stay consistent and organized. Like penning daily lists in a notebook or maintaining appointments on a phone calendar. These tactics keep me sane during holiday festivities and family gatherings, and ensure I don’t miss a flight or forget an ingredient for the holiday party appetizer.
Set up money time. I love to get as much financial paperwork outta the way by year end: donate to fave causes (like Martha’s Table!), file receipts, catch up on business accounting, set up a folder for the year’s tax documents, and pay annual bills. I also review my bank statements and retirement contributions to get a snapshot of my financial profile. It gives me a heads up on how much to save for big stuff like buying a car or an overseas excursion in the coming year.
Clean house. In my household, a quick sponge-down of surfaces and closet clean-out not only result in sparkling countertops and a sack of goodies for Goodwill, but it helps clear my mind and I breathe easier. Setting aside an extra hour or two during the Christmas decor takedown (with holiday jingles in the background!) will give you a better handle on your domestic sanctuary for the new year.
Reflect. Now is the perfect time to step back from the daily grind and take it all in. Think of it as reviewing the “highlight reel” of the past year. Reflect on the moments of delicious victory and happiness, past challenges, and lessons learned. Writing this down in a journal will help fuel personal growth and provide a reminder of all you’ve done that you can look back on in the years ahead.
Hone in on your top three. While you’re in the journaling mood, determine three big goals for 2019. What would be crazy cool if it happened next year? A cross-country move, new job, a travel adventure? I like to brew a cup of tea, sit down, and get to dreaming. I like to keep my goals in line with the areas of health, career, and relationships. It’ll serve as a great starting point for an action plan and give you an extra pep as you step into the new year.
We’re just eight weeks away from the big ball drop, after which the year will evaporate into a wisp of memories. Cheers to the rest of 2018!
