Starting anything new, especially a new workout, can be a little scary. As you step into an unfamiliar environment with a room full of unrecognizable people, you may feel that twinge of uncertainty.
Is this the right style of workout for me? Can I keep up? What am I supposed to be doing?
It’s time to shake those new workout jitters and get excited about uncharted fitness territory with these five tips below:
Recruit a friend. What’s better than checking out that exciting new boot camp or spin studio in the neighborhood? By making it a workout date with your bud. You can boost each other during that tough push-up set or uphill climb. Bonus: after the workout, catch up over a smoothie.
Get the workout scoop. Do some research about that new workout beforehand. Click around the studio webpage for an FAQ section, ask for tips from a friend, neighbor, or coworker that may have taken the class, or check out online reviews from the studio’s Yelp or Facebook pages to learn about past attendees’ experiences. Information about workout intensity, instructor style, and what to wear and bring to the workout will give you a clear picture of what you’re in for and how to get the most out of your experience.
Get there early. Arriving to the workout studio or space early will allow time to fill out new participant paperwork, get oriented with the space and amenities, and ask any final questions. And if you still have a few minutes before the workout, get ahead of the game by doing your own warm-up and stretch. You’ll feel (and look!) like you belong there in no time.
Do your best. Keep in mind that you’re doing something new and unfamiliar with your fitness regimen. Stay at a level that is challenging, yet manageable. Realize that it may take a few classes to really get the hang of things, so don’t get discouraged too quickly. To reduce risk of injury, make sure you’re positioned so that you can both see and hear the instructor guidance. Make adjustments to the workout moves. And take breaks to sip water, stretch, or catch your breath when needed. Go at your own steady pace.
Reward yourself. Commemorate that feeling of accomplishment with something fun. Stepping outside of your comfort zone - while doing something new with your body - is a big deal! Celebrate with a cool new workout top, a healthy and delicious dessert, or some down time with a latte and magazine.
So what are you waiting for? Get pumped about that new workout you’ve been eyeing, and use these tips to prepare for and ultimately crush the workout. You’ve got this.
