We all have those days when the thought of exercising sounds about as exciting as sitting around a dentist office waiting to get a root canal. Boring, painful, dreadful… just plain yuck. Yes, I’ve had more than a few of those feelings in my lifetime. So what’s a workout warrior to do? Take a deep breath and push past the (sometimes whiny) discomfort of "I don’t wanna..." and just get it done. So, here’s a cheat sheet to get you back on the exercise bike faster than you can say Woo Hoo!
Brighten the day. When I’m feeling sluggish pre-workout, I put on a fluorescent top or leggings and a cute pair of sneakers. I have a few “go-to” outfits that make me feel like a bodacious workout princess, and it’s an instant energy boost. Better yet, find a top or bottom that accentuates your best assets, or a “power color” that makes your eye or skin color pop. You’ll feel confident and empowered to conquer the world, not to mention that kickboxing workout.
Cue that playlist. You know those jams that just make you want to move? If you’re finding it hard to get up and get at it, blast a jam (love my Rick Ross collection) with a beat and do some light stretching. You’d be surprised how quickly it’ll lift your energy level and make you actually want to run (or dance) around the house, block, or nearby park.
Phone a friend. One surefire way to get that workout on is to make a plan with a reliable friend. Sign up to try that new salsa workout or hot yoga class, or plan an evening jogging route and etch it in your calendars. You’re less likely to duck out if someone else is counting on you to be there. Couple the workout with a post-workout chat at that nearby salad joint and you have yourself an evening to get excited about. For more tips on a workout buddy, read on here.
Let’s Make a Deal. Practice the art of negotiation on yourself. This is my favorite one. On the mornings I don’t particularly want to go for a run, I give myself an incentive to stick to my workout schedule, like watching that extra half-hour of television, eating chia seed pudding, or getting a pedicure. Earning my perk makes my healthy choice that much sweeter.
Bottoms up. Still dragging? Maybe you need some food or fluid fuel. How about a pre-workout nutrition punch? A fresh fruit smoothie or tall glass of cold coconut water can provide the jolt you need to get into the workout mode. Or consider a light snack, like a banana with peanut butter. I fuel up with a glass of water, creamy cup of coffee, and a superfood-protein smoothie an hour before my morning workouts.
I like to tell my students that we always feel better walking out of a strong workout than we did walking in. So what are you waiting for? Get out there, get moving, and let the workout and endorphin high begin!
